Nestled in the vibrant heart of Tanzania, where the majestic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro meet the enduring spirit of its people, Zara Charity shines as a beacon of hope and transformation.

A Journey of Impact Rooted in Tanzania’s Soul
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Tanzania, where the majestic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro meet the enduring spirit of its people, Zara Charity shines as a beacon of hope and transformation. Established in 2009 by Zainab Ansell, a trailblazing Tanzanian entrepreneur and founder of Zara Tanzania Adventures, this registered NGO (certificate number 00NGO/00003212) has grown into a powerful force for change.
With a mission to uplift vulnerable communities through education, healthcare, and sustainable tourism, Zara Charity weaves a tapestry of empowerment that spans Moshi, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and beyond. By harnessing the energy of ethical travel and global volunteerism, it turns Tanzania’s natural and cultural riches into opportunities for lasting socio-economic growth. As of September 2025, with accolades like the 2025 World Travel Awards crowning Zara Tanzania Adventures as Africa’s Leading Adventure Tour Operator, Zara Charity’s innovative model continues to inspire and deliver measurable impact
Zara Charity’s Mission: Transforming Lives Through Targeted Support

Zara Charity’s mission is to support marginalised groups orphans, women, underprivileged families, and Kilimanjaro porters by providing essentials like food, shelter, education, and healthcare while championing environmental sustainability. Operating in regions like Moshi, where many households live below the poverty line, the organisation delivers targeted aid. It funds school fees for children at the Moshi Kids Centre, supplying uniforms, books, and meals to support consistent attendance.
The education sponsorship program supports children through donor partnerships, offering sponsors detailed profiles to foster personal connections think of a child like Amina, now thriving in math with dreams of teaching. The mission extends to vocational training at the Moshi Women Training Center, where women master tailoring and agriculture, reducing reliance on unstable tourism jobs.
Healthcare initiatives include mobile clinics serving families with vaccinations and maternal care, bolstered by a 2024 partnership with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) for mental health support for porters facing high-altitude risks. Through the Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society (MKPS), Zara Charity advocates for fair wages, with a March 2025 donation of climbing kits enhancing safety porters like Juma, on his 50th climb, now summit without frostbite thanks to insulated gear.
Environmental efforts are integral, with the Coastal Cleanup in Tanga (relaunched November 2024) removing ocean trash, engaging locals and tourists in global data collection. With transparent annual audits, Zara Charity continues to expand its impact, proving small interventions yield big results
Zara Charity’s Vision: A Future of Sustainable Socio-Economic Development
Zara Charity envisions a Tanzania where every child attends school, women drive economic progress, and tourism preserves natural heritage. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals like Quality Education (SDG 4) and Gender Equality (SDG 5), it promotes self-sufficiency through community-led solutions. The Maasai Literacy Project, launched in 2022, has enrolled girls in literacy classes, improving Ngorongoro school enrollment. Women like Esther, who transformed a micro-loan into a beadwork cooperative employing local women, embody this vision.
Environmental sustainability is key, with reforestation efforts around Kilimanjaro, combating deforestation. Eco-lodges, run by locals with profits reinvested, support this vision. Partnerships with groups like For Afrika enhance cross-border learning, while the 2025 strategic plan targets new sponsorships and healthcare expansion to more villages. As Zainab Ansell says, “We see a Tanzania where vulnerability becomes vitality.

Empowering Communities in Tanzania: From Classrooms to Conservation
In Moshi, Zara Charity’s empowerment is vivid. At Kaloleni Moshi School, donated furniture eased overcrowding for students, improving retention. The Moshi Kids Centre, serving children, cuts malnutrition with daily meals. A March 2025 classroom launch, streamed on YouTube, showcased children’s gratitude through song.
The Asali Project in Isirwa village empowers women through beekeeping, producing honey yearly and funding preschool for children. A leader noted, “Asali is honey, but also our independence.” Healthcare reaches residents, reducing infant mortality, while KCMC partnerships train local nurses. Vocational programs at the Women Training Center launched micro-enterprises, injecting income into local economies. Girls’ empowerment modules at the Kids Centre raised female enrollment since 2023. Eco-tourism training enables villagers to guide safaris, preserving habitats while earning fair wages. Annual feedback from beneficiaries shapes adaptive programs.
Giving Back Through Tourism: Where Adventure Meets Altruism
Zara Tours, lauded at the 2025 World Travel Awards, provides ongoing financial and in-kind support to Zara Charity, funding education and health programs. The “Zara Tanzania Charity with Adventure” package a 10-day blend of Kilimanjaro’s Machame Route ($1,969), Serengeti safaris, and Ngorongoro visits includes Kids Centre tours and tree-planting. Travelers engage directly, reading to children or harvesting honey, sparking donations like the 2025 European group’s five-classroom sponsorship. Ethical practices via MKPS cut porter injuries. Tours fund reforestation, protecting Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, with Zainab Ansell noting, “Tourism pumps life into communities.” This model draws eco-conscious travelers, boosting impact via “give-back” fees.
Volunteer Tanzania: Hands-On Impact in Moshi and Beyond
Volunteers Tanzania offers 1-12 week programs starting at $200/week, connecting global skills to local needs. At Moshi Kids Centre, volunteers teach English to children, with 2024’s Sarah launching an arts program for kids. Women’s empowerment roles involve training at the Moshi Center, while medical volunteers at KCMC treat patients weekly. Professional volunteers enhance SME accounting or lodge ICT, supporting tourism. A 2025 volunteer shared, “Teaching at Moshi Kids is priceless.” In 2024-2025, volunteers contributed hours, raising funds for expansions. Combined with tours, volunteering amplifies impact, as seen in a 2014 housing project for orphans.
Interconnected Efforts and Moshi Kids: A Holistic Tapestry
Zara Charity’s initiatives: Tourism funds education, volunteers deliver it, and communities sustain conservation. The Moshi Kids Centre, supported by tour profits and volunteers, nurtures children with meals and counseling. A 2023 X post highlighted kids’ joy during visitor interactions. New tech labs in 2025, built with ICT volunteers, prepare kids for digital futures. The Asali Project’s honey sales fund scholarships, showing how one tour dollar fuels education and leadership. Despite funding challenges, 2025 Awards visibility and partnerships aim for growth by 2030.
